Verbal Disputes

چکیده
Is there a distinction between questions of fact and questions of language? Many philosophers have said no. But a version of the distinction is ubiquitous, in philosophy and elsewhere, in the notion of a verbal dispute. Intuitively, a dispute between two parties is verbal when the two parties agree on the relevant facts about a domain of concern, and just disagree about the language used to describe that domain. In such a case, one has the sense that the two parties are “not really disagreeing”: that is, they are not really disagreeing about the domain of concern, and are only disagreeing over linguistic matters. Perhaps the most famous case of a verbal dispute in philosophy comes from William James’ Pragmatism (1907). A man walks rapidly around a tree, while a squirrel moves on the tree trunk. Both face the tree at all times, but the tree trunk stays between them. A group of people are arguing over the question: Does the man go round the squirrel or not? James presents himself as resolving the dispute with the following magisterial speech:

متن کاملThe Impact of State Relationships on If, When, and How Conflict Management Occurs1
This paper examines if, when, and how states act to manage militarized disputes. I argue that the relationship between the third party and disputants, the management history, and the characteristics of the conflict help us understand when management occurs and the management techniques employed. I find substantial evidence that biased third parties are quick to offer management services and to ...
متن کاملLePUS - A Declarative Pattern Specification Language
At present, the only means used for specifying design patterns are contemporary object notations [Rumbaugh et. al 91; Booch 94], lengthy verbal descriptions, and sample programs. The inherent ambiguity and incompleteness of these means preclude devising tool support and fuel disputes over “their true intention”. We identified a compact set of abstractions with simple graphical representation, w...
متن کاملOn the prevalence of directly retrieved autobiographical memories.
In this study, we used process measures to understand how people recall autobiographical memories in response to different word cues. In Experiment 1, participants provided verbal protocols when cued by object and emotion words. Participants also reported whether memories had come directly to mind. The self-reports and independent ratings of the verbal protocols indicated that directly recalled...
متن کاملUnderstanding Disputes In Online Auctions
While much attention has been given to reputation mechanisms to deter fraudulent behavior in online auctions, we know little about the nature of disputes or the types of problems that users face. This is an exploratory analysis of 129 disputes for six different types of products that were sold on eBay. In the descriptive and multinomial analysis, we find eight different types of disputes includ...
